In one of its toughest competitions of the year, the Pleasant Ridge wrestling team put together one of its best performances so far this season.
Competing in the 2012 Sabetha Tri-State Invitational, the Rams saw five earn medals enabling the squad to place third in the 12-team competition.
"After a sort of disappointing meet Thursday, I thought we really rebounded well at Sabetha," PR coach Darren Weber said. "There was more intensity and focus and I liked how we mentally came to wrestle."
The five medalists included three gold — Clayton Gum (2-0 at 106), Tony Weber (2-0 at 113) and Jared Johnson (2-0 at 170); and two silver — Blake Graham (2-1 at 132) and Ethan Payear (2-1 at 152).
PR will host a home dual tourney Saturday.
Pioneer trio excel in Smithville
At the 2012 Smithville Invitational, the Leavenworth wrestling team had three individuals leave with top honors.
Danny Wilson put together a 3-1 mark to take first at 113 pounds while Jesse Colver collected three pins, went 5-0 and won the 220-pound division. Nathan Butler recorded pin wins in all five of his 285-pound matches to take first.
As a team, the Pioneers finished seventh out of the nine-team competition.
Leavenworth will be in the Lee’s Summit Holiday Invite Saturday.
Lansing pair wins at Eudora meet
The Lansing wrestling team competed at the Eudora Tournament Saturday and saw two of its own earn fourth place titles.
Jordan Girard at 113 pounds and Caleb Ward at 182 each took fourth overall in their respective weight classes. Each went 2-2.
Cole Hoing was the only other Lansing placer — he finished seventh at 126. As a team, the Lions came in 17th place.
Lansing will be at the Emporia Tournament Saturday.
Imac’s Stanley shines at Onaga
Bruce Stanley and the Immaculata wrestling team took part in the Onaga Tournament Saturday, where Stanley led the team with a silver medal.
The 152-pound grappler went 1-1 and lost in the finals by a single point. Sam Linder, 160, went 1-2 on the day while Paul Gilbert (120) and Dakota Fricke (182) were 0-2.
Immaculata will compete at Pleasant Ridge Saturday.
