USM men improve to 9-5 while Lady Spires drop two more

The Saint Mary men’s basketball team improved to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference  with an 80-70 win over Haskelsl Saturday.
The Spires jumped to a 38-31 halftime lead and held on in the second half. They shot 53 percent from the field and made 10 three-pointers on the night.
The Spires will have a couple of weeks off until resuming play Jan. 3 against McPherson.
The Saint Mary women’s basketball team suffered a pair of losses over the weekend to Missouri colleges. The Spires lost 70-62 to Stephens College on Saturday and then 78-49 to Central Methodist on Sunday.
Saint Mary is now 4-10 on the season and 0-4 in the conference.
Shelby Watson led the Spires with 10 points in the loss to Stephens College. She also had five assists and three rebounds before fouling out.
Watson scored 18 in the game aagainst Central Methodist, but the team fell behind early, trailing 39-26 at the half, and were not able close the gap in the second half.
