Lansing wrestling coach Ron Averill was encouraged by the showing of his young team in the Emporia Winter Wrestling Classic Saturday.
The Lions took 12th out of 19 teams in a tough field with 45.5 points. The meet was won by Junction City with 208.
“We felt like we had improved performances and that was encouraging to see,” Averill said. “It’s good to see the kids working hard and making improvement and something we hope to see as the season goes along.”
The Lions’ best results were in the lower weights. The Lions were led by junior captain Cole Hoing, who took fourth place in the 126-pound class.
Sophomore William Gering took fifth place at 138 and sophomore Sky Summers took sixth at 120.
“That was great to see Bill (Gering) finish in the medals for the first time in his first varsity season,” Averill said. “Cole and Sky both had good tournaments too. They both lost to the same wrestler twice, but were real competitive.”
Lansing is off until after the start of the new year.
