To the editor:
Each year, billions – yes, billions – of farm animals live in miserable conditions that we wouldn't wish upon our worst enemy. Many are confined so intensively they can't even turn around in a circle or flap their wings for years on end.
These are animals that, just like our dogs and cats, feel pain, pleasure, and various emotions. Most of us would never want to see our pets in pain, yet we unwittingly support the pain and suffering of billions of animals each year by eating high amounts of meat, eggs, and milk products.
One way we can help to reduce the suffering of animals in factory farms is by simply eating less of them. Cutting out meat one day of the week is simple enough, and it does a lot of good for animals.
Consider making "Meatless Monday" one of your New Year's resolutions, and make 2013 the year you started to eat less meat.
