  • As 2012 draws to a close, so too does the last term of the city of Lansing’s longtime mayor, Ken Bernard. On Jan. 3, Bernard will retire as current city Councilman Billy Blackwell is sworn in to become the first new elected mayor for Lansing in almost 30 years. After that regular meeting, the city will be hosting a reception from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. for Bernard in the community center beneath City Hall. City Administrator Mike Smith said the ceremony will begin with comments from the new mayor Blackwell. “Then they’re going to turn it over to me,” Smith said. “I’ve got some things I want to say because I’ve been working with the mayor since 1979.” Bernard has served as mayor almost continually since 1983, aside from a short break from 1991 to 1993. Following Smith’s comments, there will then be a couple of other presentations followed by a chance for the audience to speak. Eventually, Smith said he’ll turn the ceremony over to Bernard himself. The public is welcome to visit the ceremony during the comments or afterward, Smith said. “We’ve got a lot of cake and a lot of punch, so anybody who wants to come in,” is welcome, he said.
