George F. Collins, Jr, 89, of Leavenworth, Kansas passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2012. Visitation will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on Sunday, December 30, 2012 from 5:00 to 7 p.m. with the Rosary at 5:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 31, 2012 at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow at the Mount Calvary Cemetery. George was born on July 25, 1923 to Blanche and George F. Collins, Sr. in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was a graduate of Immaculata High School. He attended Kansas State, UCLA, and graduated with a degree in engineering from Rockhurst College. George was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. George served his country in the Army during WWII spending most of his duty time in Europe.
George met his future wife, Anne Irene Duffin, through his best friend, John Hoins, who married Irene's sister, Emma Jane. George and Irene were married on June 30, 1951 at the old Immaculate Conception Cathedral. George joined his dad and his uncle in the family business, Collins Construction Company in the 1950's and 1960's. In the 1970's, George was the director of the Urban Renewal Program in Leavenworth. In the 1980's, George worked for the Department of Engineering and Housing at Fort Leavenworth and later at Whiteman Air Force Base.
George was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Parish. He was a previous member of the Jaycees and the Elks. In his spare time, George loved to follow sports, to read, and particularly to spend time with his family. George never knew a stranger and always had a kind word, a smile, and an open mind for everyone he met.
George is survived by his wife of 61 years, Irene Collins, his.four children, Anne (Karl) Bertram, George (Kathleen) Collins III, Susan (Mike) Kenaga, and Mike (Jacinda) Collins. He was blessed with eight grandchildren, Jillian Collins, Andrew Collins, Adam Collins, Collin Kenaga, Connor Kenaga, Chase Collins, Samantha Collins, Zachary Collins, and one great-grandchild, his baby doll, Eden Brownell.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Immaculate Conception Church.
