A teenager was killed when a car went of the road and into a pond Sunday northwest of Leavenworth, according to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Desirae N. Crossland, 15, Atchison, was taken to the hospital but her injuries were fatal, according to the report.
She had been a passenger in the car that went off U.S. 73-Kansas 7 Highway in the area of 179th Street. The accident was reported at 5:48 p.m. Sunday.
The 2002 Pontiac Sunfire had been traveling east on U.S. 73-K-7. The car began to drift to the left. The driver, Felicity A. Crossland, 18, Atchison, over corrected to the right and then to the left. The vehicle went off the road to the left and went into a ditch. The car went through a fence and then rolled over into the a pond, according to the report.
According to Undersheriff Ron Cranor, when sheriff’s deputies responded to the accident, the vehicle was submerged in the pond and at least one person still was in the car. Two others were able to get out.
The driver and another passenger, Kelsey M. Essig, 18, Atchison, were injured and taken to the hospital, according to the KHP report.
All three of the vehicle’s occupants had been wearing seat belts.
