Officials report quiet New Year’s Eve

Even with the added problems of a snow storm, local law enforcement officials reported a fairly calm New Year’s Eve.

“I think the weather scared off people,” Undersheriff Ron Cranor said.

The Sheriff’s Office had a couple of reports of accidents Monday afternoon, one of which was a case of a car that went off the road. The other accident didn’t result in an injury, according to Cranor.

Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department, said his department had a lot of calls New Year’s Eve, but no major incidents were reported.

“We did have extra officers out New Year’s Eve,” he said.

He said five accidents were reported in the city Monday and three more were reported Tuesday. He said the accidents were minor. He said there were three other traffic complaints about things such as stalled or stuck vehicles.

There was one DUI arrest Monday in Leavenworth, and three people were arrested for underage possession of alcohol.

Nicodemus said there were reports of shots being fired, which isn’t unusual for New Year’s Eve. He said the practice of celebrating the new year with gunshots is inherently dangerous. If a person fires a gun into the air, the bullet still will land somewhere.

“What goes up must come down,” Nicodemus said.

He said the police received four calls regarding shots fired. He said the police also had two calls about fireworks, which are illegal in the city of Leavenworth.

Things also appeared to have been pretty quiet in the city of Lansing. A list of calls for the Lansing Police Department shows there were some traffic complaints but no accidents were reported Monday. There was one DUI arrest early Tuesday morning.
