Team Outlook: STRENGTHS — A strong group of lifters return this year for the Leavenworth powerlifting team.
The majority of those experienced competitors come from the girls’ side, where state medalists Maggie Lee and Lacie Thornton will be looked to provide leadership and consistent production.
“Both are terrific leaders,” coach Daniel Capps said. “Both lead by example while training and competing and also the way they conduct themselves in everyday life.”
On the boys’ side, upperclassmen Mike Stratton and Jarred Donnelson will be asked to help a young group that is still developing.
WEAKNESSES —  Inexperienced depth, much on the boys’ squad, is the biggest area that needs improvement for Leavenworth.
Numbers are consistently affected by those going out for other winter sports such as wrestling and basketball, but Capps feels the team can overcome the deficit.
Big games: Jan. 12 at McLouth; Feb. 9 at Basehor; 5A State Championship in March; 2nd Annual Pioneer Deadlift-A-Thon on March 23; April 6 at NASA High School Powerlifting National Championships
Coach says: “I am very excited to see this team compete during 2013. Although we will miss our 2012 graduates Austin McDaniel, Enrique Gonzalez-Garcia, Hunter Anne Postier, Janay Johnson, Lauren Patelli and Alyssa Rivera, we certainly returned more than we lost for 2013.
We have some high quality lifters on this team and lofty goals to go with them for the year. One of our overall goals is to improve each year as a team, and sitting where I am right now, it looks as though we will do just that.”
