  • A fire Friday night at Lansing Correctional Facility is believed to have been accidental, according to a prison official.
The fire was reported at 7:42 p.m. Friday in a chemical plant at the prison. No injuries were reported, according to prison and fire department officials.
Rick Huhn, chief of Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1, said the fire burned through the ceiling and roof of the building before the flames were knocked down by a sprinkler system.
“It held it until we got there,” he said of the sprinkler system.
Huhn said firefighters were on the scene for about two hours Friday. The Kansas State Fire Marshal’s was contacted and is investigating the fire.
Huhn said preliminary findings indicate the fire started in a mop bucket.
LCF spokesman Brett Peterson said no one had been in the building at the time of the fire. An alarm system alerted prison staff.
Peterson said the chemical plant is used for Kansas Correctional Industries. The building contained supplies and raw materials used in making paint and janitorial supplies.
According to Peterson, it’s too early to estimate the cost for repairing damages caused by the fire.
