  • It had been awhile since the University of Saint Mary women’s basketball team experienced victory.
More than five weeks, 53 days and 10 games had passed since the Lady Spires last won a contest back on Nov. 13.
All that changed Saturday though, when the squad’s hard work finally paid off. Behind 16 points from Bailey Hooker, USM toppled visiting Bethany College 64-55.
“I thought our defensive intensity was really good for us,” USM coach Mike Basler said. “Once that set the tone we started making shots and it just became contagious.”
The performance included 14 points from Jennifer Harmon and 12 points from Jordan VanNess, which enabled the home squad to build a 37-31 advantage at half.
That edge continued to grow slightly throughout the second half until the Lady Spires finally rid themselves of its losing streak with the nine-point win.
“We were finally able to put it all together both offensively and defensively and it was good to see,” Basler said.
Perhaps the biggest assest to the Saint Mary cause was the team’s defense, which held Bethany to 35 percent from the field and one of 12 from 3-point territory.
USM, 1-5 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and 5-11 overall, will host Manhattan College tonight at 6 p.m.
