• Demolition of old jail approved

  • The old Leavenworth County Jail can be torn down.

    That was the decision Tuesday night of the Leavenworth City Commission. City commissioners reversed a decision of the city’s Preservation Commission, which had denied a request from the county government to demolish the old jail.

      When they met Tuesday, Leavenworth city commissioners took the following action:

      They approved an ordinance to rezone 501 Olive St. to general business district.

      They affirmed an action by the mayor to release easements for a hotel development project.

      They approved a proposal from One Beacon for a commercial insurance package for 2013 with an estimated premium cost of $361,457.

      They approved an updated memorandum of understanding with the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office.

      They approved a bid from Hamm Landfill of $18 per ton for the disposal of dewatered sludge from Water Pollution Control. The city hauls an average of 3,500 tons per year to the landfill.

      They approved bids for chemicals for the Wastewater Treatment Plant for a projected cost of $54,383.

      They approved a resolution for 2013 general improvement projects. The vote was 3-1 with Commissioner Mark Preisinger voting “no.”

      They approved a bid from Diversified Builders & Developers in the amount of $33,450 for the demolition of six properties.

      They approved a bid from Roberts Chevrolet Buick in the amount of $16,688 for 2013 Chevrolet Silverado for the Inspections Division.

      They authorized the sale of a home at 621 Kickapoo St. for $80,000 as part of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program.
