One person was taken to the hospital following a two-vehicle accident this morning at Fourth Street and Metropolitan Avenue, police officials said.
The accident was reported around 7 a.m.
A 57-year-old woman had been driving a 2008 Buick Lucerne west on Metropolitan Avenue when she attempted to make a left turn onto Fourth Street. The light was green, but the driver did not have a green turning arrow, according to traffic Sgt. Ralph Sorrell of the Leavenworth Police Department.
The car collided with a 2000 Acura car that was traveling east on Metropolitan heading toward Centennial Bridge. The Acura’s driver, a 39-year-old man, also had a green light and attempted to avoid the collision. The cars collided “semi head-on,” according to Sorrell.
The driver of the Lucerne was transported to Cushing Memorial Hospital for what were described as minor injuries. The other driver was not injured.
The driver of the Lucerne was cited for allegedly failing to yield, according to Sorrell.
Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens said the accident tangled up traffic that was heading to Fort Leavenworth but the wrecked vehicles were removed from the scene fairly quickly.
