  • Authorities are looking for a man who robbed a downtown Leavenworth business Friday morning while armed with a handgun, a police spokesman said.
The incident was reported around 8:30 a.m. Friday at JoJo Dee’s Pets, 301 Cherokee St.
The 55-year-old victim told police she had arrived to open the store when she was approached by the armed suspect. He went into the store with the victim and took money from the cash register. The man then left the store on foot, according to Leavenworth Police Chief Pat Kitchens.
“The victim suffered minor injuries and was evaluated by EMS on the scene but did not go to the hospital,” Kitchens said.
The chief did not comment about how the victim had been injured. He said the suspect’s gun was not fired during the robbery.
The amount of money that was taken was not disclosed.
Kitchens said authorities didn’t know yet Friday whether the suspect had been waiting for the victim to arrive at the business.
“It’s certainly a possibility,” Kitchens said.
He said investigators were checking Friday to see if the suspect had been captured on any surveillance camera.
The suspect was described as a light-skinned black male who is in his late teens or early 20s. He was wearing a denim jacket and a baseball cap.
There was information indicating the cap may have had the word “Sonic” on it, Kitchens confirmed.
Anyone with information about the robbery or suspect is asked to contact the Leavenworth Police Department’s Detective Division. The non-emergency number for the Police Department is 651-2260. People also can call the Police Department’s Clue Line at 682-CLUE, or 682-2583, to anonymously provide information.
