  • A fire in the Leavenworth County Jail damaged some electrical panels Monday, but no injuries were reported, a Sheriff’s Office official said.
The electrical fire was discovered around 1:15 p.m. Monday. Sheriff Andy Dedeke said he believes  the fire started in a central box and then spread to several other panels. An officer saw a flame flare up.
“It went out about as quickly as it erupted,” Dedeke said.
He said the panels are not part of the system that provides electricity to the jail. He didn’t comment about what the panels specifically are used for but said it’s related to the security of the jail.
He said jail officials maintained control over the facility and inmates never were in danger.
The fire occurred during Dedeke’s first day as sheriff. He was elected to the position in November.
