  • With nine minutes left in regulation, it seemed like perfection was slipping away from the Spires.
However, a monstrous 27-8 run to close out the contest kept the Saint Mary men’s basketball team’s undefeated conference season alive.
Trailing 53-43 on the road at Southwestern Wednesday, USM had just under 10 minutes to save its perfect league mark. During that span, the Spires proceeded to outscore the Moundbuilders by 19-points and went on to claim a 70-61 victory.
The win was the team’s 10th straight, moved USM to 9-0 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference and 14-5 overall.
Saint Mary had three finish in double digits — Jordan Wilcox with 16 points, Shiron Williams with 13 and Marc McGory with 15. JEB Greenberg snatched a team high nine rebounds.
USM will try to stay spotless in league play Saturday when they host Bethel at  5 p.m.

    Lady Spires nearly pull upset
The game was going as planned for the Saint Mary women’s basketball team Wednesday.
Facing nationally ranked Southwestern, the Lady Spires were able to slow the action down to start the road contest. The strategy worked as USM led 23-22 at half.
However, Saint Mary could not continue the game plan in the second half, getting outscored 45-34, and lost 67-57.
Kendra Mattox led the Lady Spires in scoring with 14 points followed by nine from Jordan VanNess and eight from Shelby Watson. Watson, Mattox and Korbynn Stallbaumer all recorded seven rebounds a piece.
Saint Mary, 1-8 in the KCAC and 6-14 overall, will host Bethel College at 3 p.m. Saturday.
