  • Medill's musings: New year, new leagues

    • email print
  • Welcome back to musing time — let's get started.
Our winter seasons are almost in full swing. The adult men's basketball leagues have begun, both Tuesday and Thursday divisions, and the youth basketball leagues are rolling.
We will begin bitty basketball on Saturday and the women's winter volleyball season Monday.
In the Tuesday men's basketball league, our first night winners were LV Street Elite (Curtis Brown), Prime Time (Brandon Hildebrandt) and Zeck Ford (Fran Weis).
The game of the evening was a thrilling 50-45 overtime victory by LV Street Elite over Bomb Squad (Brad Heim). Rodney Chambers (Bomb Squad) was the leading scorer in the game with 17 points.
Aaron McLaren (Zeck Ford), and Cody Mohan (Oh Yeah!) were the leading scorers for the evening with 20 points each.
The Thursday night men's basketball league saw Mutual Savings (Dru Wheatcroft), Wheaton Warbirds (Jake Kavanaugh) and 2711 (Brent Sellers) come away victorious.
Jordan Glenn had 29 points and Dru Wheatcroft's 27 points led the way in the evening's scoring.
Saturday was the tip-off of our youth basketball season.
The first and second graders are playing as coed teams at Nettie Hartnett Educational Center. Our third and fourth grade leagues this year are divided into separate boys' and girls' leagues, which are contested at Lawson Elementary School.
Once again, the boys' and girls' fifth and sixth grade leagues return to West Intermediate School. This season, we have 43 teams between the three age groups.
A huge thank you goes to Bill Alford (Nettie Hartnett), Jimmy Watkins (Lawson) and William Cook (West), our gym supervisors who had everything up and going for all of our teams when they arrived.
I want to commend our coaches at all levels as they work patiently with our children. The parents and spectators were awesome as they focused on the positives and cheered the good plays by both teams on the floor.
I want to recognize all of the parents who assisted with the score sheets and clocks to make the day run smoothly — I hope you all return.
Our referees were phenomenal as they worked with the coaches and made the games educational and instructional.
This Saturday brings coach Derek Zeck and his great coaching staff from the up-and-coming Leavenworth High School girls' basketball program to the Riverfront Community Center for our bitty basketball clinic.
The clinic will run four weeks at the Riverfront Community Center gym. The three-year-olds will meet from 9-10 a.m.; four-year-olds will meet from 10-11 a.m.; and kindergartners will meet from 11 a.m. to noon.
We are encouraging everyone to park in the parking lot south of the Riverfront Community Center gymnasium — across the street form the Carousel Museum — and enter through the south double doors of the gym.
Page 2 of 2 - Next Monday will be the start of women's volleyball.
It is exciting that all five of the teams from the fall season are returning. We will have our defending undefeated champion Drillers (Wendy Sachen) with the target on their backs.
Boom (Sherry Schwinn), Dominators (Ruth Striggow) and Six Pack (Kim "Todd" Rhoades) will be taking direct aim at the Drillers. The Misfits (Lona Lanter) have reloaded and are returning as is Diggin' It.
The women play two games per night beginning at 6 p.m. each Monday.
Reminder to all of our runners out there — start getting ready for the Five Trails Half Marathon and 10K set for May 19.
It is the largest foot race in Leavenworth County showcasing quality racing on a challenging course that makes you wonder "Who said Kansas was flat?"
We love our runners. You are the center of our attention. Register at active.com.
You are also invited to join our half marathon training program. The 16-week training program plus excellent coaching equals success on race day. For more info, visit facebook.com/FiveTrailsHalfMarathon.com.
The City of Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department are excited to be a sponsoring partner of the Leavenworth race series. The Five Trails Half Marathon is one of the races that make up the race series.
