  • Police are asking for the public’s assistance in finding a man who robbed a woman at gunpoint Thursday in Leavenworth.
Lt. Chris Kear with the Leavenworth Police Department said there may be people who witnessed the crime Thursday morning without realizing at the time what was happening.
The incident  was reported shortly after 10 a.m. in the 2200 block of South Fourth Street.
The suspect reportedly had been sitting on steps to a building the victim, a 61-year-old woman, entered. The woman later exited the building and went to her car in a parking lot. The suspect approached her vehicle, knocking on a car window. When the woman opened her car door, the man pulled a handgun on her, according to Kear.
“She gave him some money,” Kear said.
The lieutenant said the victim chased after the suspect a short distance as he headed to his own vehicle. As the suspect drove away, his struck a parked car.
He then headed north on Fourth Street.
    No injuries were reported.
The suspect was described as a black man in his 20s. He wore a red winter cap, and he may have had long hair sticking out from underneath the hat. He also wore a dark-colored coat. He drove a white four-door sedan. The vehicle was damaged in the front driver-side area as a result of hitting the parked car.
Kear said police don’t believe the incident is related to a robbery that occurred last week in downtown Leavenworth.
