  • Being the only two area wrestling squads to compete Saturday, Lansing and Pleasant Ridge chose to do it at the same place.
Participating in the Sadowski Tournament Holton High Tournament on Saturday, the Lions nudged the Rams by 1.5 points. Lansing racked up 71 points to place eighth overall while PR accumulated 68.5 to come in at ninth.
“I don’t think anybody was satisfied with our performances,” Lansing coach Ron Averill said. “We would’ve liked to come home with a few more medals and a few more placers than we did. We felt like we really didn’t wrestle to the best of our ability, but hopefully that will serve as motivation heading into this final month.”
Individually, Pleasant Ridge’s Jared Johnson captured the biggest achievement by winning gold in the 170-pound class. The grappler, who is unbeaten this season, won 18-3 in the finals.
The rest of the Ridge medalists were Clayton Gum (106) winning fourth, as did Aaron Brown (195), and Tony Weber won fifth at 113. All three Rams went 2-2 on the day.
Three Lions headlined Lansing’s tourney. Jordan Girard (113), Sky Summers (120) and Cole Hoing (126) all went 2-2 to earn fourth place medals.
Will Gering in the 138-pound class, Caleb Ward at 182 and Treyvon Taylor in the 195 division all went 1-3 and placed sixth.
Lansing will compete at the Baldwin Invite Saturday at 9 a.m. while Pleasant Ridge is off until the Onaga Tournament on Feb. 1.
