To the editor:
The current effort of the City of Leavenworth to "repair" the eroding sandstone on the Community Center is a perfect example of why this country is going broke and buried in debt. Where is the money coming from: from grants mostly. And where do grants come from: from the federal government who borrows the money from China and our self-imposed wounds like quantitative easing, another phrase meaning printing billions of paper money and debasing our currency.
The eroding sandstone of the Community Center does in no way affect the integrity of the building. The so-called repair is only for aesthetic reasons and frankly such work will only belie the fact that we have a treasured old building in our community that we have been using for years with those same stones looking today exactly like they did 50 years ago.
They will look the same way 50 years from now and the building's structural integrity will remain like it has been from the beginning: rock-solid structure.
The ultimate cost of this "repair" is well in excess of $6,000,000. That is a six with six zeros behind it and we cannot afford and neither can the republic afford this massive waste of money.
We need to stop this thing now because I do not want my children, my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren to have to pay for it.
