  • It has been a tough week for the Leavenworth boys’ basketball team.
After stretching its record to 6-3 Thursday, the Pioneers suffered its third straight loss Tuesday. This time, a 67-58 defeat at the hands of Topeka Hayden.
“We were just sloppy with the basketball,” Leavenworth coach Larry Hogan said.
“They shot the ball real well, but teams will do that when you give them open looks. We left players open on the perimeter and turned the ball over too much and you aren’t going to win that way.”
The first period saw both teams begin well offensively, ending with Topeka up 19-16.
The Pioneers then captured a quick advantage that transformed into a Topeka lead before halftime.
From there, the home team never surrounded the edge.
Leavenworth did make a push in the second half, cutting the deficit to seven. Yet, it couldn’t string together enough baskets to continue the rally.
“The last couple of games we have had times where we go on 10-0 runs,” Hogan said, “but we’re having trouble keeping them going. We have to make more shots at the end of these streaks to really make an impact.”
Cameron Wiggins finished with 23 points for Leavenworth while Jeff George added 14 and Jason Randall 12.
Leavenworth, 6-6, will travel to Lawrence Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
“The good thing is that we have five days to get healthy and figure out some issues,” the Pioneer coach said. “We are still trying to find ourselves and that can take time.”
