A Leavenworth man has been sentenced to two years of probation for attempting to inflict cruel and inhuman corporal punishment on a child, court records show.

Lavell A. McCoy, 47, was sentenced last week to one count of attempted abuse of a child. The crime occurred in May in Leavenworth. The victim was a girl who was born in 2005 and is a relative of McCoy.

McCoy had been charged with abuse of a child. But he pleaded no contest in October to an amended charge of attempted abuse of a child by attempting to inflict cruel and inhuman corporal punishment, according to court records.

He was sentenced Friday in Leavenworth County District Court.

District Judge Gunnar Sundby suspended an 18-month prison sentence and placed McCoy on probation.
