  • A single statistic summed up Thursday’s night Leavenworth girls’ basketball game — 45-7.
Those three digits made up the halftime advantage the Lady Pioneers were able to build against Hutchinson.
“Obviously, when you hold a team to seven points in a half, that is a great defensive effort,” LV coach Derek Zeck said. “We did a great job putting tons of pressure on them.”
Leavenworth allowed just two first half field goals and cruised to a 63-23 victory over the Salt Hawks.
The win came in the opening round of the Glacier’s Edge Girls Basketball Tournament in Emporia, which means the team will play tonight at 7:45 p.m. for the right to play in Saturday’s final.
Versus Hutchinson, the Lady Pioneers quickly squashed any thoughts of defeat.
Ball pressure from all over the court allowed LV to rack up a multitude of Hutch turnovers, which the squad quickly turned into points.
“This game we finally scored off our defense,” Zeck said.
“Our defense basically created our entire offense. We scored everything off that.”
At half, Leavenworth was up 38 points and strolled to the 40-point win.
Tyler Johnson led the team in scoring with 21 points while Alicia Brown was next with 11.
