To the editor:
With all the bitchin' goin' on, I wish someone would tell me what the specifics are. What is in the executive orders that are illegal? What are the specific Second Amendment infringements that are being perpetrated?
Last Supreme Court case affirming Second Amendment rights was District of Columbia et al. v Heller, No. 07-290, Argued March 18, 2008--Decided June 26, 2008. I will quote from Syllabus, a summary:
1. The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home. Pp 2-53......
2. Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.
For example, concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment or state analogues. The court's opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms.
Miller's holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those "in common use at the time" finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons. Pp 54-56."
Freedom to some people is parity e.g. if the government can have a 60-cal, grenade launcher, M-16, Abrams, atomic bomb, then it is my right to have one, too?
I was a soldier and I took an oath to defend the Constitution; all government workers do. Is not the Second Amendment there? Is it logical to believe that a majority of us would lie and subvert our great country, or is it being paranoid or just wanting our way?
Sometimes I think people watch too many movies, "Red Dawn," "Enemy of the State," "True Lies." Maybe some feel a "need" for protection. Some, I'm sure, feel a need to be protected from them. Two recent examples:
1) A 4-year-old girl shot in the head by her brother because the dad left a loaded firearm out. news/Jan, 22.
2) Leavenworth Times, Jan. 9, Lenexa, AP. Man out at a restaurant with a valid concealed carry weapon reached into his carry pocket and accidentally shot his wife in the leg. Police said he would probably get his permit pulled. Da!
You cannot legislate common sense; but if you're going to own a gun you ought to at least be smarter than one.
