  • After prosecuting cases in Shawnee County for several years, Chris Scott says he was looking for a new opportunity. And that's what brought him to the Leavenworth County Attorney's Office.
Scott, 33, is a new assistant county attorney for Leavenworth County. He will be prosecuting person felonies, which he said includes crimes such as batteries and assaults, and drug cases.
"I just started on Monday," he said.
One of the things he's been doing this week is reviewing cases for filing charges, something he didn't do when he worked at the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office. Cases there were reviewed for charges by other attorneys.
Scott also has been observing cases this week in Leavenworth County District Court. He said there are differences between jurisdictions in terms of how things are run.
Another thing he's having to adjust to is a paperless office.
Scott said he's originally from Topeka. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He worked in the corporate world for a little more than four years before staring law school at KU.
"I just decided I wanted to do something new," he said of his decision to go to law school.
He graduated from law school in 2008. And that year, he went to work for the Shawnee County District Attorney's Office. He started there prosecuting juvenile offender cases but also worked on felony traffic cases and DUIs.
"I was in the gang and drug unit for a while," he said.
He then worked on a general case load.
Scott said he applied for the position with the Leavenworth County Attorney's Office in early December and went through an interview process. He learned he'd been hired earlier this month.
County Attorney Todd Thompson said Scott has great experience. Thompson also said Scott had recommendations from attorneys he respects.
"He shows a lot of energy and tenacity to pursue cases and fight for what's right," Thompson said of his new assistant county attorney.
