On Thursday, the Saint Mary men’s basketball team saw its 14-game winning streak — and undefeated conference mark — vanish.
Traveling to Sterling, who is second in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, the Spires struggled to keep up with its hosts.
By game’s end, the Warriors had built a double-digit lead and enjoyed a 88-71 win.
The loss bumps USM down to 12-1 in the KCAC, 18-6 overall, yet the group still remains in sole possession of first. Sterling now sits at 17-7.
Saint Mary trailed the Warriors 38-35 at the half. That deficit remained intact for most of the game until the final moments, where Sterling put the finishing touches on the upset.
Shiron Williams and Kevin Harvey led USM in scoring with 14 points while the team made just 6-of-25 from the 3-point line. The home squad shot 12-of-22 from behind the arc.
The Spires will look to get back on track Saturday when they host McPherson at 7 p.m.
Lady Spires beat by nine
The University of Saint Mary women’s sustained its 11th conference loss Thursday.
At Sterling, the Lady Spires were upended 77-68. The defeat pushes USM down to 2-11 in the KCAC, 8-17 overall.
Saint Mary will host McPherson Saturday at 5 p.m.
