Pins did the Pioneers in Wednesday.
Traveling to Gardner-Edgerton, the Leavenworth wrestling team competed but ultimately suffered five pin losses in route to a 42-27 defeat.
“We wrestled tough,” Pioneer coach Jay Johnston said. “I was very impressed how everyone wrestled on their feet tonight. But we lost because we gave up five pins and only got three. It was a very winnable dual.”
Notable Leavenworth highlights from the evening’s competition included Kelsey Mason (145), Jesse Colver (220) and Nathan Butler (285) recording the Pioneers three pin wins.
At 113-pounds, Danny Wilson was a 9-2 victor while Danial Wilson wrestled to an 8-3 victory at 132.
Peter Gardner was a 7-5 winner in the 170-pound match.
“If you take out the pins, I was happy how they competed tonight against a strong opponent,” Johnston said. “It’s probably the best we’ve wrestled as a whole on our feet all year.”
Leavenworth will compete in its Sunflower League meet Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
