  • With some reminder postcards already sent out last week, the chairman of the committee planning the Leavenworth St. Patrick's Day Parade said preparations are kicking into gear.
The parade is set for 1 p.m. March 17 in downtown Leavenworth, said chairman Tim Scanlon, who took the reins of the effort following the passing away last year of its co-organizers for 29 years, Darlene Kenny and Dona Thibault.
    "It's going on," Scanlon said.
He said the plan had been for the 2013 parade to be Kenny's last and for Scanlon to take over afterward, he said.
This year will mark the 30th annual St. Patrick's Day celebration in Leavenworth and Scanlon to celebrate the committee is hoping to get some former participants back for this year's parade.
"We've got two of the former Irish officers coming back," he said,
referring to the Command and General Staff College students who have in the past served as part of the official party for the parade.
And invitations are out for past grand marshals to come back and be recognized during the parade.
For everyone else who wishes to participate, Scanlon said entry applications are available at www.lvirish.com. The parade reportedly had about 100 entries last year, including floats for some of the city's longtime Irish families like the Scanlons and the McEvoys, local marching bands and civic and religious groups.
"We're hoping that we have more," because of the anniversary, Scanlon said, "but we'll see."
As in past years, Scanlon said a full schedule of events will be announced soon.
