Firefighters picked up a man on the bank of the Missouri River Sunday after his canoe began to sink, a Leavenworth Fire Department official said.
Leavenworth firefighters received the report around 3 p.m. Sunday. Members of the Fort Leavenworth Fire Department also responded and placed a boat in the river.
Leavenworth fire Capt. Shawn Kell said the man apparently had been canoeing on the river when the canoe sprung a leak and started sinking.
A Leavenworth firefighter went with the Fort Leavenworth firefighters in the rescue boat. The canoeist was located in the area of Sherman Army Airfield, Kell said.
“He refused any EMS treatment,” Kell said.
