  • The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Mary Georgette Groh, 85, who died on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, KS.
    Dorothy Groh was born on August 12, 1927 in Emporia, Kansas, the seventh of eleven children born to George Sherman and Dorothy Freitag Groh. She graduated from Sacred Heart Grade School and Emporia High School, Emporia, Kansas.
    On August 18, 1949, Dorothy entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth and, as Sister Mary Georgette Groh, made her profession of vows on August 15, 1951.
    Sister Mary Georgette served as prefect at St. Joseph Home in Helena, MT and Mount St. Vincent Home in Denver, CO. She taught in elementary and secondary schools in MT, CO, KS, WY, OK, and MO. She served as Chaplain in the Pastoral Care departments at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka, KS; St. Mary's Hospital and Medical Center in Grand Junction, CO; and at Midland Hospice Care in Topeka. She had been a part-time Chaplain for Hospice of Kansas when she retired.
    Sister Mary Georgette received a BS in Education from the University of Saint Mary, Leavenworth, and CPE certification from Topeka State Hospital.
    In the community, Sister Mary Georgette was preceded in death by her sister, Sister Margaret Groh, and cousin Sister Helen Mary Thill. Survivors include nieces, nephews, friends, and her SCL community.
    A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth, where friends may call after 4:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Ross Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. Leintz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S. 4th St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
