  • The University of Saint Mary joins the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth as they mourn the loss of educator Sister Helen Forge, 90, who died on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, KS.
    Helen Cecilia Forge was born on Jan. 18, 1923 in Leavenworth, KS, the middle child and only daughter of Herman and Cecilia Schmidt Forge Sr. Helen was raised on a farm in the Salt Creek Valley area, Kickapoo, and attended Coffin Grade School and Immaculata High School. After working in business offices for five years, she entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on Aug. 14, 1945 and, as Sister Marie de Sales, made her profession of vows on Aug. 15, 1947. She later returned to the use of her baptismal name.
    For the next 30 years, Sister Helen either taught or was principal in elementary schools in KS, MO, IL, CO, and MT. She was awarded a M.S. Ed. degree from the University of Saint Mary.
    From 1977-1980, she served as Director of Development for Elementary and Secondary Schools for the KCK Archdiocese. From 1981-86, Sister Helen served on the SCL Personnel Board as the Elementary School Supervisor. In 1985, Sister Helen was named chairperson of the Education Department at the University of Saint Mary where she became assistant professor of education in 1988, and remained the education department chairperson until 1992. Sister Helen was elected to the leadership team of the SCL community in 1992 and served as Community Secretary for two terms. At the end of 12 years, Sister Helen retired in August 2004.
    In the community, Sister Helen was preceded in death by her cousin Sister Marie Ann Bertels. Survivors include her brother Eugene Forge, Round Rock, TX; nieces, nephews, friends, and her SCL community.
    A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth where friends may call after 4:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Annunciation Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 15. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery, on the Mother House grounds. Davis Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Education Department of the University of Saint Mary, 4100 S 4th ST, Leavenworth, KS, or the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S 4th ST, Leavenworth, KS 66048.
