Though she’s been at the helm for months on an interim basis, Adele Ducharme was officially announced Wednesday as the new chief executive officer of Leavenworth’s Cushing Memorial Hospital.
“It’s an honor to take on this new and welcomed challenge during such an exciting time for Cushing Memorial Hospital,” Ducharme said. “I look forward to continuing to strengthen true and long-lasting partnerships among the hospital and the business and civic leaders in the Leavenworth/Lansing area. As part of the larger Saint Luke’s Health System, we are equipped to provide the highest quality care to our local community, and I’m committed to ensuring we do that every day.”
Ducharme was appointed as the interim CEO as a successor to Gary Wages, who took over on a temporary basis after former CEO Ron Baker left the job in April 2012 to take the top administrative position at the new Saint Luke’s East Hospital in Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Ducharme was brought on board at Cushing in January 2011 as the hospital’s chief nursing officer, replacing Susie Beying. Her previous positions included vice president of patient care at Brown County Regional Healthcare in Georgetown, Ohio. Ducharme brings 20 years of leadership and management experience to the job and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Saint Martin’s College and a master’s degree in business administration and health care from the University of Phoenix. She’s been the interim CEO at Cushing since August 2012.
“We are very pleased that Adele has accepted the position as Cushing Memorial Hospital’s chief executive officer,” said Don Sipes, vice president of regional services for Saint Luke’s Health System. “She has demonstrated her effectiveness as a leader in her prior roles as chief nursing officer and interim CEO of the hospital. Her experience at Cushing, and in the health system, makes her uniquely qualified to lead Cushing at a time of significant challenges stemming from national health care reform and significant change in the local environment.”
Cushing board members also praised Ducharme’s work at the hospital so far.
“Having had the opportunity to work closely with Adele in her role as interim CEO for the past several months, I know she will continue to provide outstanding leadership,” said Mike Crow, chairman of the Cushing Memorial Hospital board of directors. “She is well regarded and respected. She knows the community well and understands what is required for Cushing to be successful in its mission of care.”
