  • State meet starts Friday for local boys' swimmers

  • For the Leavenworth and Lansing boys’ swim teams, everything comes down to this weekend. The 5-4-3-2-1A state meet starts up today, meaning its the last shot for the local swimmers to make a mark on the 2013 season. Seven Lions will be competing at the tournament while the Pioneers will be taking four. Lansing's attendees will be Matt Holden, Jake Hecht, Chase Martin, Stephen Szmed, Dion DePaolis, Sam Sheaks, Jack Bresser and Tyler Tavano. Representing Leavenworth will be Josh Camarena, Hunter Higgins, Carson Owens and Jacob Walker. “Our individual goals are to try and make it to the next day, but we have some team goals as well,” Lansing coach Josh Floetke said. “We want to put some new records on the board to finish the season right.” Holden, Szmed, DePaolis and Bresser will take part in the 200 medley relay while Bresser, Hecht, DePaolis and Szmed will participate in the 400 freestyle relay. Individually, DePaolis will be in the 100 butterfly, Holden and Martin in the 500 free and Szmed in the 100 breaststroke. Leavenworth's foursome will race in the 200 medley relay. Prelims begin Friday for both squads while the finals are Saturday at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka. Heats are set to begin at 9 a.m.
