  • A Fort Leavenworth assumption of responsibility ceremony for National Guard Brig. Gen. Victor J. Braden brought together people from his military and civilian roles.
Thursday’s ceremony was attended by military officials from Fort Leavenworth, where Braden now spends part of his time as the Combined Arms Center’s deputy commanding general for the Army National Guard.
The ceremony also was attended by people connected to the job Braden holds in the civilian world including his boss, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.
Braden serves as deputy attorney general of Kansas. He is in charge of the attorney general’s criminal litigation division, which prosecutes cases involving crimes such as homicides and public corruption.
Among the other people in attendance Thursday was Lawton Nuss, chief justice of the Kansas Supreme Court.
Before the ceremony, Braden said he’s enjoying his new position at Fort Leavenworth.
“The Combined Arms Center is a unique organization,” he said.
Braden is only the second person to serve as the deputy commanding general for the Army National Guard. The position was created for the Combined Arms Center in 2009.
“This is only the second ceremony of it’s kind,” said Maj. Gen. Gordon B. Davis Jr.
Davis is CAC’s deputy commanding general for leader development and education.
When given the opportunity to speak during the ceremony, Braden offered thoughts about leadership development. He’d prepared slides to accompany his remarks.
Before taking on his current duties with CAC, Braden served as assistant division commander for the 35 Infantry Division, which has its headquarters at Fort Leavenworth.
The first person who served as CAC’s deputy commanding general for the Army National Guard is Maj. Gen. Scott Thoele. He now serves as the deputy commanding general for the Army National Guard for the Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, N.C.
