Good news makes for a bad secret.
It took less than a day for the local community to find out about Leavenworth's Colin Dougherty, who has been selected Sportsman of the Year by the Kansas City Sports Commission.
The Pioneer basketball player will be honored and awarded the distinguished accolade on April 19 at the Kansas City Downtown Marriott.
He, along with the area Sportswoman of the Year, Coach of the Year and Community Champion ― who have not been notified or picked yet, will be recognized for "their commitment and achievement in sports," according to the commission's website.
"Each year the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation honors outstanding individuals for their commitment and achievement in sports," www.sportkc.org states. "The benefits of sport are long-standing and this awards banquet celebrates all the positive aspects of sports."
Dougherty is a senior at Leavenworth High School, where he has been a part of the basketball team his entire four-year career.
"He has a great work ethic," Pioneer basketball coach Larry Hogan said. "He brings it everyday and gives a 100 percent on the floor. He has just been a pleasure to work with."
