It was a banner day for Saint Mary basketball Wednesday.
To begin, the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference named USM head coach Jon Bishop as the conference’s men’s Coach of the Year.
In addition, Spires senior guard Jordan Wilcox was selected KCAC Player of the Year.
“I think this was a great accomplishment for Jordan in his senior year,” Bishop said. “His play had a lot to do with how well our team did. He was very deserving. Jordan was the best player on the best team in the KCAC this year.”
The Spires, after finishing the year as conference regular season champions, also had several players named to KCAC All-Conference teams.
Wilcox, a guard from Holcomb, Kan. was named to the All-KCAC first-team
Kevin Harvey, a senior guard from Athens, Texas, was named to the All-KCAC second-team
Chip Schneider, a senior forward from Tribune, Kan., was named to the All-KCAC third team.
JEB Greenberg, a senior guard from Leavenworth, made the Honorable Mention list.
Bishop praised his players, saying the Spires’ awards can be attributed to the team’s excellent efforts and level of play this season.
“It's a reflection on our team and our players and what we accomplished this year,” Bishop said in regards to his Coach of the Year selection.
“I was given this award because my guys had a great year and because of all of the players in the program and the coaches on my staff.”
The top-seeded Spires open the KCAC Championship Tournament at 7 p.m. Friday against No. 8 seeded McPherson.
