Leavenworth police officers may be relying on a “walk-in” traffic accident report system today due to the winter storm.

Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department, said the department will transition to the walk-in system if snow conditions are similar to what occurred during last week’s storm.

With the walk-in system, police ask motorists involved in accidents to exchange information and wait to report the accidents until the roads are safer. People involved in accidents that result in injuries are asked to go ahead and call 911. Police also should be contacted right away in cases in which drivers of suspected of impairment.

If the Leavenworth Police Department goes to the “walk-in” system, information will be posted to the department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts as well as the city’s government access channel. Dispatchers also will inform motorists who call 911 to report accidents.

Nicodemus said it is important for drivers to exchange more than phone numbers. He said people also should exchange things such as vehicle and insurance information.
