The Kansas Department of Transportation was blaming snow and high winds for widespread power outages in the northeast and southeast Kansas following a winter storm Tuesday morning. As of 11:45 a.m., Westar Energy, the largest provider of electricity to Leavenworth County, was reporting outage affecting nearly 6,200 meters in Leavenworth as well as Allen, Anderson, Bourbon, Butler, Coffey, Cowley, Crawford, Douglas, Elk, Greenwood, Harvey, Jefferson, Johnson, Labette, Linn, Lyon, Montgomery, Osage, Reno, Saline, Sedgwick, Shawnee, Sumner, Wilson, Woodson and Wyandotte counties. Kansas City Power and Light reported approximately 45,000 meters without power in the Kansas City Metro area. Areas with outages longer than four hours include Greenwood County and Sedgwick County. Warming centers have been established to provide individuals with a warm place to go during the day during power outages. In Leavenworth County, there are two centers open or on standby: The Tonganoxie Fire Department and the Basehor Fire Department.
