  • After celebrating yet another substate crown Saturday, the Lansing boys' basketball team has now turned its full focus on the season's ultimate goal.
For the third straight year, and fourth time in the last five seasons, the Lions will be heading to the Class 5A state tournament this week after beating Schlagle 60-36 over the weekend.
"Good players have been the key," Lansing coach Rod Briggs said. "Good kids who have worked hard and done a lot of stuff in the offseason to get better. We have built a sort of tradition here and that is what you want to do."
The competition begins on Thursday for the Lions, who are 20-1 overall and the No. 2 seed. They will take on No. 7 seed Hayes, 14-7, at 6:30 p.m. inside the Topeka Expocentre.
Versus Schlagle Saturday, Lansing turned a single-digit halftime lead into a blowout victory. The Lions started the third quarter hitting on all cylinders, going on a 12-0 run to extend a 24-17 lead to 36-17.
From there, the squad rolled to the 24-point win.
"I think our pressure defense got to them," Briggs said. "That has been our calling card all year. I think we had some guys play pretty well tonight at spurts and just did a very nice job."
Lucas Mein and Khalil Bailey led the Lions in scoring with 11 points each while Joe Schneider added 10.
