Firefighters recovered the body of a Doberman pinscher that drowned today in a pond that had a thin layer of ice, a fire department official said.
The incident was reported at 12:05 p.m. today in the area of 155th Street and Eisenhower Road.
Rick Huhn, chief of Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1, said ice less than 1/2 inch thick covered only about half of the pond. The dog apparently ended up under the ice.
The dog's owner waded into the water in an attempt to save the canine. But Huhn said the water was pretty cold.
Huhn said firefighters wore ice suits when they recovered the dog's body.
