The Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association announced Thursday that Leavenworth had been tabbed as the 2013 5A Academic Awards State Champions.

The Pioneers had four seniors finish with GPAs higher than 3.0 — Josh Ammel, Kenneth Sculley, Jesse Colver and Nathan Butler.

Butler, Sculley and Colver all had 3.5 or better marks.

On Tuesday, Butler also competed in the Annual KC Metro Classic, where he defeated Missouri undefeated state champion Melieke Collins of Center 11-1.

I figured I would throw in my two cents here. This is just another example of the great job LV coach Jay Johnston and his staff are doing at Leavenworth High.

For a few years now, the Pioneer program has been climbing and I really believe that will only continue as long as Johnston is at the helm. Plus, having talent like Nathan Butlers, Danny Wilson, etc. helps a lot too.

Anyhow, I think this recognition is as much a honor to the coaches as it is to the kids. Kudos to both.
