1. An Irish Stew Dinner is sponsored by the Leavenworth Rotary Club each year; when is the event this year?
Leavenworth Rotary's 33rd annual Irish Stew Dinner will be on March 11 from 5-7 p.m. at the Riverfront Community Center. There will also be a Silent Auction with goodies to bid on throughout the dinner.
2. What is the meal cost? Where can I get tickets?
Tickets for the event are $7 in advance or $7.50 at the door. Advance tickets may be obtained from any Rotarian. The full meal includes Irish stew, peas, cole slaw, garlic toast and butter, shamrock cookies and beverage-coffee, tea, or soft drink. This hearty meal is a bargain! Carry-out meals are available too.
3. What else happens at this popular event?
Entertainment will include a fiddler, Irish step dancers, piano music and singing. There will also be a raffle drawing for a large Saint Patrick's Day Specialty Basket valued at $100. And, if you traditionally drink green beer, there will be a cash bar available during the dinner as well.
4. Do you expect a large turnout?
Yes, we do expect a lot of people. Most years 450 to 500 meals are served. Many attendees come year after year and enjoy the excellent meal, silent auction, and entertainment while visiting with friends, family and neighbors. Honored guests this year include Commandant Gareth Prendergast and his family from Ireland. Major Prendergast is here in Kansas attending the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth. In addition, the Grand Marshal of the Leavenworth Saint Patrick's Day Parade, Mr. Don Murray, along with his family, has been invited to attend the dinner.
5. What happens with the money that you raise from this traditional event?
Rotary uses these funds for worthy community support projects. One of the primary projects is the awarding of several scholarships to high school seniors from the local area to attend college or vocational training school.
