During a meeting Monday, the Leavenworth Board of Education approved Steve Yeoman to serve as principal of David Brewer Elementary for the 2013-2014 school year.
Yeoman has served as the principal at West Indianola Elementary in the Topeka-Seaman School District since 2009. Previously he was an elementary assistant principal in the Topeka public schools district for two years, and a fifth and sixth grade elementary teacher for seven years.
“I could not be more honored and excited about coming to the Leavenworth school district and David Brewer Elementary, Yeoman said. "My visits to the school and with the district’s leadership team have impressed me a great deal. My family is excited for the move and I am anxious to begin this new adventure as a Pioneer.”
Yeoman is a graduate of Washburn University (Bachelor of Arts in elementary education, Master of Arts in education administration) and currently enrolled in Kansas State University’s doctoral program.
In addition to bringing experienced elementary leadership to the district, Yeoman also is a proponent of the Impact Schools process ― and is implementing this school improvement process with the staff at his current school.
Survey data solicited from the David Brewer Elementary staff and school community assisted the selection process. The survey results returned a consensus "top three" responses defining desired leadership attributes of a new principal (problem-solving, dependability, and strong communication) and characteristics (ability to build a cohesive staff, deal fairly and directly with staff and students, develop and communicate clear expectations).
This feedback assisted human resources personnel and the selection team's visits with Yeoman, identifying him as the best fit to serve as the next principal at David Brewer Elementary.
“Everyone has already been very gracious and accommodating," Yeoman said. "It is obvious to me that Leavenworth public schools prioritize student learning, while emphasizing relevant professional development for all, and showing genuine care for the teachers in the district. It’s given me confidence that Leavenworth is an exceptional place to work and grow, and I hope I am able to complement the wonderful things taking place in the district.”
Yeoman will officially begin service as principal of David Brewer Elementary in July. In the meantime, he plans to coordinate with current Principal Jofee Tremain to ensure a smooth transition in to the next school year.
Tremain is taking another position in the district.
