  • Leavenworth firefighters were still determining the cause of a blaze Monday evening at a home in the central portion of the city.
Fire Chief Mark Nietzke said firefighters from Leavenworth as well as Fort Leavenworth and Fire District No. 1 of Leavenworth County based in Lansing were called to battle a blaze at a single-family residence at 408 Marion St. Though he was out of the office at the time, Nietzke estimated the report came in at about 4:30 p.m. Monday evening and that the fire took about 20 to 30 minutes to contain.
“The first truck on the scene had fire and smoke,” he said.
The fire appeared to be contained to a front living room of the home, he said. Three individuals were inside the house at the time of the fire, but Nietzke said all three made it out on their own and no injuries were reported.
As of 6:30 p.m., Nietzke said the investigation was just getting started as to the cause and the extent of damage to the property.
“It's heavily damaged, I can tell you that,” he said.
