  • A fire that damaged a house on Marion Street Monday afternoon remains under investigation, a Fire Department official said today.
The fire was reported around 4:45 p.m. Monday at 408 Marion St. There were four people in the residence at the time of the fire, but no injuries were reported, according to Leavenworth Acting Fire Chief Mark Nietzke.
Assistant Fire Chief Mike Lingenfelser said firefighters who were responding to the blaze could see heavy smoke in the area of Second Avenue and Marion Street. Once on scene, they could see fire and smoke coming from the front of the house.
Lingenfelser said firefighters "knocked down" a fire in the living room area. He said the fire had reached the ceiling and started to spread into the attic area. He said fire also had made its way into walls and soffits of the roof.
He estimated that firefighters knocked down what he described as the initial fire within 40 minutes.
Lingenfelser said the living room had heavy fire damage. There was smoke and water damage throughout the house. He said firefighters estimated the loss to be $115,000.
Nietzke said the local Red Cross provided assistance to the home's occupants.
Firefighters from Fort Leavenworth and Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1 stood by at Leavenworth stations to handle additional calls in the city while crews were at the scene on Marion Street, according to Lingenfelser.
