  • While it may be a vacation for their students, a number of Leavenworth teachers will be using a portion of their summer break for training. The training is being offered as part of a joint program between the Leavenworth public school system and the University of Saint Mary.
Saint Mary and the school district were awarded a three-year Mathematics and Science Partnership grant. Brad Willson, director of curriculum and instruction for the Leavenworth public schools, said the grant will help provide professional development in the area of math for educators who teach kindergarten through eighth grade.
Willson said the program can benefit teachers who, for example, work at the elementary level but may not be math experts.
He said the training will be oriented toward what are referred to as the Common Core standards, which are used in Kansas.
"And they're going to design math lessons, math units," he said.
Willson said most of the training for the public school teachers will be provided by representatives of Saint Mary, but there might one or two people from outside of the university who are utilized for the program.
Willson said he was contacted by someone from Saint Mary asking if district officials wanted to partner for the grant. He learned last month that the grant had been awarded.
He said the grant is being paid for with money from the federal government that was awarded to the state. The three-year grant will provide $148,761 in funding each year.
A two-week academy will be offered this summer. Willson said the grant was written to serve 39 teachers.
A number of teachers already have expressed interest in participating in the program.
During the following school year, there will be instructional coaching as part of the grant.
