The search for Leavenworth High School's new head football coach is entering its final stages.
On Thursday, Pioneer athletic director Shawn Terry expressed his hope to recommend a new coach by Wednesday at the latest.
“We got it whittle down to a couple, and hopefully by next week we can take a name to the board for their approval,” Terry said. “We want to try and get it done over spring break with March 20 being the date we are shooting for.”
While no specifics were given on the final group of candidates, Terry was happy with the number of responses to the opening.
“We had some really good applicants, high school and college head coaches,” the A.D. said. “A lot of tough ones to choose from.”
The position became vacant earlier this year when former coach, Kevin Kopecky, left to take the same job at Eudora High School.
During his three-year tenure, Kopecky rebuilt the Pioneer program, including taking the school to the playoffs in 2012 for the first time in 20 years.
Last season Leavenworth finished 4-5, its best record in more than a decade.
