  • A man who was pursued by Leavenworth authorities Friday night ended up crashing into a light pole, a police spokesman said.
The wreck occurred after police had called off the pursuit. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, according to Maj. Dan Nicodemus, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.
"We're familiar with who it was," Nicodemus said.
He said charges will be filed against the suspect in the appropriate court.
The incident began shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday in the 700 block of North Sixth Street.
Nicodemus said an officer attempted to stop the suspect for allegedly speeding. The driver didn't stop and allegedly began to drive recklessly.
Nicodemus said the officer recognized the driver and there was no need to continue to chase him. The driver reportedly had a suspended driver's license. The pursuit was terminated in the 500 block of Dakota Street.
The suspect's vehicle was found in an alley in the 700 block of Kiowa Street after it had struck a light pole.
