Sister Owen Marie Falk
The Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth mourn the loss of Sister Owen Marie Falk, 92, who died on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, Kansas. She faithfully served the People of God as an SCL for 73 years.
Zita Marie Falk was born on February 2, 1921 in Decatur, Illinois, the oldest of six children born to Harry A. and Marie McKey Falk. She graduated from Saint Joseph's Grade School and Fort Collins High School, Fort Collins, Colorado. Zita Marie entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on September 1, 1939 and as Sister Owen Marie Falk made her profession of vows on March 2, 1941.
Sister Owen Marie received a B. S. in Education from the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kansas. An outstanding primary teacher, she spent 40 years teaching in parochial elementary schools in eight Western and Midwestern states. After retiring from teaching, S. Owen Marie began a second career with the Denver Archdiocesan Housing Committee, Inc. that lasted for 20 years. Her next position was that of volunteer in the Oncology Department at Exempla-Saint Joseph Hospital in Denver. She retired to the Mother House in Leavenworth in November, 2010.
In the community, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sister Marie de Lourdes Falk. Survivors include her sisters Pat Falk and Anne Brenner, Denver; sister-in-law Sylvia (Larry) Falk, Franklin Park, NJ; nephews, nieces, friends, and her religious sisters in the SCL community.
A vigil will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth where friends may call after 4:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Ross Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27. Interment will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds. R L Leintz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
