  • Thanks to lingering winter weather, Wednesday marked the first time this year the Leavenworth boys' tennis team was actually able to face a rival opponent.
However, the new season started with a fizzle when the squad opened 2013 at home against Shawnee Mission West.
The visiting Vikings swept the Pioneers, winning all six of the singles matches as well as the proceeding three doubles bouts.
“It was a rough start, that's for sure,” LV coach Shad Langfoss said. “You don't get much of a break in the Sunflower League and we began right off the bat with one of the better teams.”
In singles play, Leavenworth's No. 1 player Wesley Barbee lost 8-1 while No. 2 Garett Seeger was tripped up 8-3 and No. 3 Michael Rielly suffered an 8-5 defeat.
Pioneer No. 4 singles player Austin Wiley experienced an 8-4 stumble, No. 5 Ben Schatzel stumbled 8-2 and No. 6 Luke Nolte faltered 8-0.
    All three doubles pairings — No. 1 Barbee/Seeger, No. 2 Rielly/Wiley and No. 3 Schatzel/Nolte — were beat 8-1.
“There were a couple matches with Michael and Garett that were real close,” Langfoss said. “They just sort of lost it at certain points, so with them and all the others, our big thing is consistency right now.”
Leavenworth will host Olathe East at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
